Grading Hardwood Flooring
White & Red Oak Grading Standards
Select:Contains minimal character marks, such as small tight knots, worm holes, and mineral streaks, as well as slightly open characters.
#1 Common: Prominent characters (with size limits) such as tight knots, open checks, worm holes.
#2 Common: Larger knot holes, open worm holes, and other open characters along with prominent color variations.
#3 Common (known as character or cabin grade): This is the lowest grades in unfinished flooring. Expect short in length and may have splits, large holes, cracks, broken tongues and other defects. Due to these imperfections we suggest adding a waste factor. However, this grade is a good value as it is inexpensive.
